In the future we'll also support the backslash for escaping \WikiWords. The ~ and ! will however still work (came from PhpWiki).
If we ever introduce a regex-based formatting kernel and alqlow for general markup escaping, than the backslash will be used in favour (exclusively) for that; because it is more widely understood as escape character.
